I've heard a technique is becoming popular, for the destructive opening of doors with Eurocylinder locks fitted (they are especially popular with UPVC doors).

Without wishing to describe the method, has anyone come across this?

The story I heard was that it was starting to sweep the country.

I was wondering if a substantial metal plate around the cylinder would help, any ideas?

Yes it is popular, particularly on badly fitted cylinders. No more than a feww mm's of cylinder should extend beyond the handleset, any more than this will present an easy opening.

Mul-T-Lok sell a cylinder that prevents this happening, but these are pricey. There are also inserts that fit behind the handleset which bind to the cylinder, again preventing this attack being successful. Best advice - make sure you have a correctly fitted cylinder, or use a bolt-through escutcheon.
