Hi

I have an office, theres a fire door in the back garage.
The firedoor was rotting and chipping away. I have arranged to have it replaced but installer has said there is delays in the getting the door and wont be installed until around 6 weeks.

The door is chipping away so bad that there is now a hole going all the way through and the door handle is coming lose.

it will be very easy for a someone to make the hole bigger and open the door from the inside.

What can I do to make the door last until the new one is installed?

Thanks

I suppose you could buy a piece of 18mm ply, cut to fit the shape and size of the outside of the door, and fix it to the door with numerous screws and coach bolts I think I'd add extra patches for the inside to cover the holes.

(coach bolts are more expensive, but can't be undone from the outside. They have a nut and big washer on the inside of the door)

Some places use a sheet of galvanised steel on the outside of the door, you often see this on the back doors of shops and commercial premises, to discourage burglars. You'd want to buy it ready cut to size and pre-drilled. I don't know what it would cost. Your builder or carpenter may be familiar with local suppliers

If the damage is just along the bottom edge and round the lock, you can buy readimade Kick Plates and Finger Plates in stainless and other materials easily, in standard sizes for most doors, or cut to size from some vendors. If this suits you it would probably be cheapest and easiest fix. The same vendors might make you one for the entire vertical edge, or the whole door size (would need special carriage if not local, but you may have a local steel supplier)

here

example around a tenner for a ten-inch high kickplate in stainless.

finger-plate (you can get these with a keyhole)

If you're getting a new door you could keep the plates and put them on it.

you can also get a bolt-through door handle. Not fixed with screws to the wood of the door, but a special bolt goes through the handles on each side, and bolts them together. There is a special screw for this. It will not come loose.

If interested (and your carpenter doesn't know a supplier) we can find you a link.

something like this, but it depends what sort of lock you have. Avoid aluminium because it is weak.

similar to john d
assuming the door is 44mm thick and the ply is 18mm [62mm]
half a dozen 50mm screws in the face off the ply on the outside off the door to hold in place
then from the inside through the door 60mm screws till flush this will give you about 14mm penetration into the back off the board
then a further patch on the inside with either the 50s or 60mm screws

alternative 12mm ply with 50mm screws in the face again to hold
then 50s from the back countersunk at least 4mm this will give you 9mm penetration off the back off the board
then clad the inside
