extending Eves for external insulation

bit of a 'how long is a piece of string' question but How easy/costly would it be to extend the eaves on my house to allow for the extra thickness of external insulation/cladding.

Its really for the gable end bit sorry not up with the jargon.

Basically, it is a simple job of striping the tiles back bit and adding some batton and retiling or completely rebuilding the roofline?

Your pic shows an elevation with an Apex - that is the two roof plane edges rise up to an inverted V.
The edges are called Verges and, in good practice, the verges project beyond the face of the apex wall by about 50mm - 60mm.
Do you mean the verges?

Where you can see the gutters is often called the Eaves/soffit area.
Is the Eaves area where you mean?

yes thanks I guess I mean the verges then. (the bit with the V), you can just make out the new extension to the right which has a much larger overhang. I guess I would be looking to match it all up.

OK, i understand and can help you with the possibility of extending the verges.

But first, from what i can see, it could be a bit awkward to apply external insulation to that gable, & a bit more expensive than usual with bridging scaffold requirements.

Off page but fwiw: the vent pipe piercing the lower roof and the down pipe next to it - can you post a close up pic of that spot where they enter the roof?

Strip back the tiles so you can get to the existing last rafter. Fit noggins and flying rafter as required to give you the overhang you need but make it so a full tile can be refitted without the need for cutting.

Cills will need extended and pipes moved out but these could be done by the EWI installer.

I am wondering if for cost/ease issues could I not just add some sort of capping to the top of the EWI/Cladding. I assume it will be quite thick though and obviously wouldn't want it to look stupid?

You could but it isn't pretty on my opinion. You can also taper the insulation boards into the existing verge overhang which could be a good compromise.

This can be done around boiler flues, for example, where extended flues are obsolete.

That's what the EWI installers have done up this way and then after a few years people like me have to come and do it properly.

Anyone got any ideas as the cost for extending my verge out by a foot or so including new facia/soffit etc?

Is it just the gable you are having this external insulation on or the whole house?
What’s the finish going to be? You mentioned cladding?

I'm looking at the gable and also the left hand side floor to roof. ill have to come out enough to cover the chimney breast but hoping to still be able to get under the soffit even if it means no EWI over the chimney breast. I plan on going around the corner for 2 feet or so probably to a first floor bay window I have. I might even replace the tiles under on the bay to similar cladding.(not in photo)

I probably render under the porch similar to new extension, but open to ideas? Also need to re-render the chimney to make.
