Wondered if anyone could shed any light on a dilemma we have.
Background: We live in a 1930s semi and we submitted planning applications for a two storey extension at the same time as our neighbour and we were going to share costs/scaffolding etc and in order to get the council to approve it. Because he was not granted an extension the same size as ours he has fallen out with us. As you can imagine this is difficult on the scaffolding side of things. We have 520mm between the two extensions - ours is ready for the roof, he has only just laid the foundation. We have had to have the scaffolding moved once as it was over the agreed 500mm width but it is supported through our extension wall and not directly to the ground so as not to interfere with his work. Having spoken with him on Saturday he was friendly enough and said that it would be ok to put the scaffolding down just outside his foundation and I said that we were perfectly happy for him to use the scaffolding for his rendering and roof when the time came - he was happy with this. The scaffolders turned up today and his "girlfriend" told them they couldn't come into the garden and basically that they want the scaffolding moved. Now this just may be an oversight on his part in not telling her of our discussion but there again it might not be.
I would therefore appreciate any ideas on how else we could position the scaffolding for the roof in order to avoid any more confrontation. He says he was going to do all his work from inside the walls of the extension... how that works with the roof I dont know.
Our roof will have a 7m Ridge to it so you can imagine we will need a lot of slate etc and need the scaffolding desparately. We will also be removed a large number of slates to which the extension roof will be joined at the ridge. Our scaffolders are now threatening to take the whole of the scaffolding down as they are fed up having to alter it at next door's whim and after the fiasco today.
Considering we both need to render and put a roof on you would think that he would be amicable to sharing the scaffolding, we haven't asked for money towards it either. We are now talking Party Wall Act and I really don't want to go down that road. Can anyone help please.
