It is my intention (hope) to run a cable up from the BT Master socket in the hall to an alcove-come cupboard upstairs and fit a cheap wall-mounted phone in this alcove to serve the adjacent bedroom.

What is the easiest way to take wiring from this connection up into the loft and down into a back bedroom for my broadband connection or fax on the PC please

If you are planning to use ADSL ( Broadband ) at the computor then

Two options

[1]
Change the front of the NTE 5 ( master socket ) for one with ADSL filter built in.

From that front panel's non filtered terminals run a pair for ADSL and from the filtered terminals run a second pair for the the telephone,

[2]
Leave the NTE 5 as is and take a single pair from the NTE 5 to a second NTE 5 where the computor will be located. On this NTE 5 fit a filtered front plate with ADSL socket on it's front. Connect all telephones to the filtered terminals of this front plate.

Option 1 above is the neatest.

Use decent cable--twisted pair Cat5 at least-not cheap telephone extension wiring

This will be worth looking at and has a useful explanation

It shows the details and if the socket in your proposed cubbyhole is chosen carefully, you could fix a dual point with two sockets (for separate, ADSL and telephone,) before continuing up to the PC point where a similar socket could be placed. This would give you maximum future proofing. (Perhaps the cubby hole could have a wireless modem sometime?)
