I bought this sensor light to swap for an existing one which wasn’t on a sensor.

The above image is the original light wiring

The below is the setup for the new light

Can someone explain what the earth arrangement should be on the new light?

This diagram they provided only shows the L and N coming from the mains and not the earth.

Where do I put the earth from the switch?

Please not I have switch anything back on yet to test.

It's difficult to see, but it looks like you have connected the earth to the switched live terminal.

The instructions are NOT helpful as they suggest the earth goes in the middle terminal, but if you have only three terminals on the fitting (Live, Switched Live and Neutral), then park your earth wire from the grey cable in a separate terminal and tuck it away inside the fitting away from the others.

Just make sure there are no earth wires connected to the new fitting. There should be (somewhere on the fitting, the instructions or the box it came in) a symbol of a square within a square, which means the fitting does not require an earth connection.

Thanks so much I’ll change that around

Just to confirm, the earth wire coming from the switch can be place in a small wago and tucked away.

Then the black wire is the switch live coming from the unit itself?

Yes. In a connector on its own without any other wires (assuming the new fitting does not have any earth wires connected to it).

Is the black wire currently connected to the earth as well?

It's difficult to see what is connected where.

If this is the case, the black wire should stay in that middle terminal, with the two browns going to the lamp holders.

I take it that you have not altered where any of the internal wiring goes?

Step 7 of the instructions is very wrong and most confusing, suggesting the earth wire should be connected to the middle terminal.

A light fitting with a built-in PIR detector is usually internally wired as follows:

1. A terminal containing the live feed going to the PIR detector.

2. A terminal containing the neutrals going to the lamp holder(s) and the PIR detector.

3. A terminal containing the output (switched live) from the PIR detector and the switched lives to the lamp holders.

4. There is usually a fourth terminal for earth, but this is not included in yours, which is why you need an extra one just to park the earth wire in the cable from the house.

The wiring from the building connects as follows:

Live goes to terminal 1, as numbered above.

Neutral goes to terminal 2, as numbered above.

Nothing usually goes in terminal 3 (as numbered above) apart from those wires already present in the light fitting. Sometimes, the wiring from the building can include an override, which turns the light on all the time until the override switch is opened. If there is such a wire, it would go to this terminal. You don't have this facility.

4. Some fittings require an earth terminal, so your earth wire from the building would go in here. Some fittings provide an earth terminal even though the fitting does not need one, so you can terminate any earth wires safely. Yours does not have an earth terminal, but you can add a separate earth terminal to park the earth in.

I have found these instructions which are clearly very old as it refers to IEE (now IET) and says "FOR USE WITH STANDARD TUNGSTEN LAMPS ONLY." so these will not be valid for a modern lamp today.

I have found many other adverts with instructions which say it is class I, there does seem to be a black wire which may be an override so the light can be turned on bypassing the PIR, but simply can't make out from pictures what there is.

So I would not like to suggest the earth wire is not required unless you can find a symbol like this 1727170998291.png which says it is class II and does not require an earth.
