How did they prepair the brickwork/blockwork for doorways back in the 70's?

I have a house from that period and there appears to be a small hole in the floor just inside the doorway. Prodding down with a screwdriver seems to indicate it is very deep. This is directly below the skirting attached to the door brickwork return/reveal (not sure what it's called!)

Can anyone point me to an old drawing of a sectional view of what it may be like under and to the sides of the door threshold?

Eg. how does the floor screed 'bridge' the 'below DPC brick/blockwork?'

How would they have done it then?

I need to understand what I should do about this hole.

Thanks in advance.

Back in the 70's some slates were often bedded across the cavity at the doors and the floor screed was taken over the top to the frame.
