Morning Guys,

Going to render my garden wall this weekend as it looks a little shabby, just thought i would see if you can give me any advice as ive done loads of plastering but never external render.

1. whats the normal mix to use (5:1 sharp and dust) ???

2. Scratch coat then final coat ???

3. Finally plastic float to finish ???

Cheers in advance guys.

Hi mate

The way i would do it is

5-1-1 don't forget the lime helps with movement and reduces the risk of cracks

Give the wall a good dust down then soak the wall

Put up a 5-6mm scratch coat let it start to set before applying the top coat give it another watering

6mm top coat rule off

Then float of for a finish (hard to explain in words)
keep a watch out on the suction water it daily.

hope this helps

Plastering sand would give you the best results for cement rendering, and after you've rubbed it up with the float, give it a sponge over. Get a nice flat rectangular/square sponge, put it into clean water, thoroughly wring it out and "very gently" rub over the surface of the render in a small circular motion. This brings a little sand to the surface, makes it look good, and also removes any small blemishes as you go. It's called a (wait for it)......sponge finish. Keep washing out your sponge regularly as you go.

Roughcaster.
