Hi,

I live ina first floor flat with external wooden stairs leading to the garden. These desperately need replacing - can anyone recommend joiners or where to look. I'm based in East London.

Thanks

Have you thought about having a metal one ? Wouldn't get burn down in a fire as with wooden stairs.

I'm open to either metal or wooden stairs, I'd like to find quotes for both and that will probably decide which one I go for

try a local steel fbrication company, some specialise in staires / fire escapes

I have read reports that that is not the case. Apparently metal can quickly warp and buckle in the heat of a fire, hardwood chars a bit but it is actually a while before it burns and/or you get structural failure.

Of course in a first floor flat, I doubt you would see any advantage of one over the other in a fire, nor would it usually be too bad to have to jump out of a window anyway (what a grim picture I am painting  )

So you should go on aesthetics and choose whichever you prefer the look of, in my opinion. :D
