Hi,

I have some interior woodwork I want to do in a few bedrooms - doors, sash windows and skirting. I wanted to use their estate eggshell topcoat.

Is their dedicated undercoat the best to use or do other brands work better? For instance, would Zinsser 123 plus be a better undercoat for sash windows compared to the farrow and ball wood undercoat?

If you mix and match paint brands they can react. Brands test the comparability of undercoat and top coats.
You painting outside?

For problem surfaces you would use a stain blocker. Undercoat then top coat. That's best practice although we don't always

Have you ever used polycell stain stop etc as a blocker them put on another coat .....ie use it as a quicker drying undercoat ?

I have done with coverstain and it hides as well as most undercoats ?

Mostly BIM. Stainaway is another but waterbased..
Also
Blockade shellac sealer.

Not polycell as I think that's more a DIY product

Yes I get that , coverstain is a bit thick but I ease it very slightly and it's opacity is very good and dries within 3 hours , unlike the overnight oil based undercoats

I note that they say it doesn't fully cure for a few weeks but I have never had a problem with it breaking down top coats if painted over after suggested drying time ?

Coverstain over melamine is 7 days curing. In good drying conditions you can cut that.
I noticed on water stains you need 24 hours or more to be sure it's going to block stains IMO.

I like BIN aqua. Have you considered that?
Not sure it can be used outside though. I've only just started using it

I would be amazed if any decorators out there have put on cover stain and waited a week for it to completely harden off

Overnight at most I would imagine is what the majority would wait

It also says it can be recoated after 3 hours ? So isn't that in itself going to go against the 7 days recommendation ?

The Wickes Trade stain block undercoat is one I have used but also oil based ......possibly the same paint as zinser cover stain bar the actual complete composition

The recoat time is for another coat of coverstain. Not over paint with emulsion.

Yes. Kitchen painters wait days for the paint to fully cure however, they don't use it for that reason. It will high build and denib nicely. That's has it's advantages.

I've used as a stain blocker and it failed because I painted the following day.
I've given it a few days over the weekend and it worked.

Quoted times are the safe times. You can ignore based on drying conditions but don't complain if if it fails.

I am all for water based primer paints if they do the job

Zinser 123 doest seem to be anything more than a general purpose primer

BIN aqua the jury seems to be out ?

I can't get on with BIN original apart from spot priming knots

BIN original is fine with a foam roller and brush.
Sort pile mini roller is also good.

What people need to understand is, there is no opacity. It's its very thin. One thin even coat is enough and crack on. Don't worry about background showing through or that it's not very white
