Ford Transit. Can't test the best. The connects are fantastic but you need to shop about. Plenty of sausages who think they're worth the better part of £10k even with 100k+ miles on.

Smaller? Ford Connect.....a very good van and a dealer on every street.
Be very careful if buying second hand though, most vans are thrashed towards an inch of their lives.

I had a few Connects between 04 and 56 reg. Mine had the old TDDi engines so were a bit breathless, but like a lot of fleet vehicles, they were limited to 70 (an indicated 74) so that wasn't really an issue.
On the whole they were very reliable.
The newer HRMWB 11 plate Transit I drove subsequently was much better to drive. 2.2 TDCi, 6 speed box, a great view of the road and a very handy hill-hold feature.
