I've had a couple of panels blow out over the recent months due to a rotten wooden post. I would like to replace the entire fence (8m) with close board, but because our land is raised it's retained with foot high concrete slabs (on end), which leaves me with a few questions...

I've manage to remove the old post and a mass of concrete around, which has left a rather large space that needs to be filled. I'm assuming that I could shutter the void and fill with hardcore and concrete? Would 6 inches around the post be enough?

I'm not sure whether to go for concrete posts or wooden, or use concrete spurs with wooden posts? Any recommendations?

Has anyone fitted a fence with concrete posts and wooden arris rails? If so, how do you fit the gravelboards?

TIA

Dave

My neighbour had exactly that arrangement fitted a couple of years ago. I think (but could be wrong) that the concrete posts had holes lower down so that blocks could be bolted through to which the gravel boards were attached. If I can I'll take a look this evening and report back.

Am just in the process of renewing all my fence - wooden posts on concrete spurs, arris rails, gravel boards etc - much prefer the strength of a closeboarded fence as opposed to flimsy panels. This is the first time in at least 25 years that I've had to do any repairs to it at all :)
