I've used Cladco (other brands are available) fibre cement lap board cladding externally, but having played around with some offcuts on an internal wall, it strikes me that if you stick it flat to the wall with no overlap, it makes a viable alternative to ceramic tiles. I mean, it's water-impervious, dimensionally stable and it looks like timber t&g, so am I a trail blazer or just a misguided corner-cutter? Be gentle! ;)

Waterproof how, in a shower enclosure? It sounds reasonable, it is a rain-screen so impervious, provided you can get the joints to also be impervious (!) then give it a go, let us know how it pans out. I like trail blazers, though not sure I'd like the look of timber cladding in my bathroom and I wonder what the cost difference is between this and tiles or PVC cladding.

I was actually thinking of using it for a feature wall in the bathroom. I'd use regular ceramic tiles for the shower enclosure. The wall in mind would need skimming before painting, but with the right adhesive (I'm checking to see if I can use dot-and-dab adhesive for this) using cladding would be a real time-saver too. A quick Google search throws up a few nice photos that appear to show the look I'm after.
I'll keep you posted!
