Hi All,

I have just had a quote for a cambelt/tensioners/water pump on my '99 1.25 zetec 16v.

I just wondered if this is a pig of a job, 300 squid seemed a little steep.

TIA

Belt is very easy to do with the right tool to lock the crank. Not sure on price of parts awhile since i've done one, but it does sound steep, i'd get another quote or two

Thanks for the swift response.

I've done two 8 valve 2 litre pug 306s before, these were very easy with nothing more than a couple of drills to lock the crank & cam. However, I thought I'd leave the 16v to the pros, but the price has made me consider having a bash at it myself!

I will shop around for a better price first tho & leave myself cocking up as a last resort.

Any DIY pointers would be much appreciated though.

The tools can often be obtained via ebay.

Or by asking on your local community forums or Freecycle group.

Just had a quote for the cam belt change on a VW touran £389 FOR BELT ALONE

The cost of the parts, water pump, belt etc will not cost more than £100 for quality parts, you can get them even cheaper.

If you can get the tools its not that big of a job, it is possible to do it yourself. Depends if you feel confident or are mechanically minded to carry it out

Thank you for your replies.

I have just learned that the water pump isn't driven by the cambelt, so that might help to reduce the cost/work.

After studying my w/shop manual, it states that removing the crank shaft pulley (the large one that drives the auxilary belt) effectively looses the timing. I don't understand how, as the timing belt is still fitted at this stage.

Confused at the first hurdle!

Thanks for the link - indeed interesting.

I think I'll be getting some more quotes then, less the w/pump.

Thanks again to all.

The crankshaft timing gear has no key on to the crankshaft so once you loosen the pulley its free to move, hence the need for timing pin, ( the kit for this engine is only about a tenner for this engine so still might be worth diy)

Mmm, I'm still a little apprehensive! I have read the Haynes & Autodata versions of how to do it.

The things I have concerns over are: Being able to undo the cr/shaft bolt, removing the cr/s pulley (I don't have a puller), not thrashing the pistons into the valves while working & getting the timing set correctly.

I checked out some of the setting tools on fleebay, some claim by using you can replace belt without loosing the timing - I presume these are false claims then?

If you use the tools to look the pulleys, the timing has to be correct.

Ok, one more thing I have concerns over then!

Surely you can't undo the crank shaft pulley with the locking pins in place for fear of breaking them?

Am I missing something?
