Fiesta mk5 powertrain “cog” warning light

Trying to bring back to life a mk5 1.4 petrol manual fiesta for our eldest, changed oil and filters and fixed a few electrical niggles, but when driven a bit hard on a quick blast, I’m getting the orange “cog” light on for the rest of the journey (see pic) Goes off when you stop the car and doesn’t necessarily come back on unless it gets a bit more hard acceleration/higher revs action.

Engine management light not on, and no faults logged on OBD.
I was thinking initially check gearbox oil level? I’m not really clear on what kind of fault this light is likely to represent as opposed to the normal engine management light.

Any thoughts appreciated!

I thought the cog light was only for automatic transmissions? Shouldn’t be any warning lights for manual transmissions. Had it been sitting about for a considerable time?

That's the thing, its a pretty basic setup so I'm not sure if/why it needs a separate "powertrain" module whatever that is. Yeah, it was sat around a lot but I've been driving it for the past few days having done the oil and filters, and the light's still coming on when I give it a bit of a blast! Think I'll check gearbox oil initially, just incase.

It's also periodically logging a P0030 lambda sensor heating circuit fault, but at least when it does that, the normal engine management (not the cog) light comes on and I can read the code. The two don't seem to coincide in terms of when they happen.

Had something similar with my sons 206 that had sat about for 9 months but it was the engine management light. Turned out it was stale fuel and a top up of the tank with fresh fuel cleared it.

This designates an engine problem rather than a transmission problem.....Ford use both this one and the engine block symbol just to confuse us..
If it was a diesel I'd say it was faulty glowplugs or similar, but obviously it's not the case here and I'd say its related to the cat / lambda sensors.
Does the car have the 'Reset' button on the left column stalk?

yep, its got a trip/reset button on the left stalk.

I believe you hold the reset button in, then turn on the ignition, holding the button for a few sec.
This should scroll through the dash functions and may give you an indication of what’s what. I imagine Youtube will have some info on this so probably best to check this out.
Ford refer to a ‘powertrain’ meaning the engine - the transmission is referred to as a ‘drivetrain’ but I’m sure there are no sensors on a manual transmission.
This sounds a bit odd, but do check out the rear stop lamp operation too!

I don’t think (but will check) that my OBD reader saw anything for the powertrain warning, but will try the instrument cluster thing

Well the last one he had, was a corsa which he paid 3 grand for then I immediately had to pay another 700 for a new clutch, I’ll never know to this day if the bloke knew the slave cylinder was almost gone, or how he could falsify (pressurise?) it to make it run fine on multiple test drives then fail the next day... a year later got hit by a van last week who didn’t fancy giving way at a roundabout and he’s now got 3k write-off payment, which I’ve told him to keep in the bank this time and run something cheap until he’s out of uni.

Did you manage to resolve this issue? I'm having the same problem with my 09 Fiesta, manual transmission.

I can’t remember exactly what it was, but I think it was a lambda sensor. It definitely wasn’t anything other than a typical engine management light type fault. Nothing to do with gearbox or anything.
