Once a metal socket mounting box is fixed to masonry - is it acceptable to use a foam filler to fill any large gaps around the box before finishing the surface with plaster / polyfilla?

Obviously I'd need to make sure no foam found its way into the box - but is there any reason not to have foam around the box?

The hole is quite deep - that's the only reason.

Just wanted to avoid having to build up layers of polyfilla - so as to get the socket back in action ASAP.

No reason not to use the foam, but it is messy and many prefer just to use filler or plaster.

Foam is good for filling hugely deep craters......

definatly. and it usually gets a good hold of the backbox aswell. tip if you foam/plaster a socket in. push 2 wall plugs into the filler. easier than drilling a hole later to add a screw if it doesnt hold properly
