Filling a Baxi pit

Hi,

I've just removed the Baxi pit from the fireplace and need to fill it.

Can I just fill it with hardcore and concrete?
Will be putting a hearth and log burning stove on top.

I'm planning on hacking away the edges first to level it with the front.
