I'm laying a basic square patio on a budget. Using mostly surplus materials and slabs.

I've laid it directly onto sharp sand rather than mortar for ease (never done this before) and also as it's not going to be used heavily.

What should I fill the joints with? I'm concerned that if I need to re level it in future that putting mortar in the joints will cause difficulty pulling the slabs up?

Could I just fill them with sharp sand?

You can tight joint them 2-3mm and then fill with kiln dried sand.

As wrath says trying to point a patio laid on a flexible bedding will not last more than a year before cracks.

What size and material are the flags?
