What should I use to fill the grain in a sheet of ply before I paint it? A joiner has made me some nice stairs but has used a grotty bit of pine for facing part of the under-stairs area. I wondered if ordinary filler could be scraped into the grain, then sanded down...

Or is there a "proper" product?!?

TIA

depends on what your doing !!!painting fill away if your varnishing find a coloured filler one or two tones darker if possible.
eg pine filler will look great for the first few months then as the wood tones down the filler dos'nt change colour

if its only a small are do what most chippies do collect the sawdust from cutting the wood and mix it with pva wood glue to give you some filler

if you havent got any sand a simmilar piece of wood and collect the dust.
take half the dust mix in little bits of pva till you have a very stiff mixture
then carry on adding both till you have enough filler for the job plus a bit more.
any left will keep for quite a while providing its in a container as near full as possible with a piece of moistend cling film stopping the air in the container drying out the filler also a tight fitting lid

sorry - yes, I should have said that I intend to paint it all white. I'll give the normal filler a go. Thanks a lot.

Personally i would clad with tounge and groove cladding, placed horizontally. Cheap as chips, quick to put up and looks great when painted.

Sanding sealer fills in grain before finishing and can be sanded to get a good finish.
