Hi,

I am about to replace my fire alarms, however, a little confused about the wiring.

On the downstairs alarm there is a three and four core cable connecting into a terminal block. And upstairs is a four core cable.

From the terminal block the live and neutral and what i assume is a cable (yellow cable) to interconnect the alarms together are connected to the alarms.

How certain can I be that the yellow cable is an interlink cable?

I ask as the downstairs yellow cable has a red sheath and upstairs does not (not sure what this means) and also when one alarm goes off the other does not, therefore unsure is it is actually an interlink cable so do not want to blow the new alarms.

I would be grateful if someone could help. See pics below.

Thanks

That looks the correct way to wire the detectors, yellow would usually be the wire to use for the interlink. The point is that the same wire should be used for the interlink.

Make sure to press the test button on each detector hard and for a good few seconds.

If in ANY doubt the alarm is not functioning correctly replace or get it checked over by a qualified electrician. Don't take chances.

Most alarms should be replaced after ten years.

Be aware alarms can be optical, ionisation or heat.
