I've not been really inclined to study fire door construction before, but I just had an idea that there were generally some dense chipboard type core with veneered surfaces each side, and hardwood lips.
I saw one today which had been kicked in by the fire service, and it was a bit of an eye opener.
3mm veneered ply on 1/2" plasterboard and then one of those corrugated cardboard inner cores like on the cheap hollow doors.
