So.. one of many incomplete diy projects that I’m considering finishing (that the old man started).

The gas fireplace has been removed from the lounge. I’ve recently done some work on the roof and rebedded the pot, pointed etc. No liner but the chimney is in good working order.

He purchased a concrete fireback.. it’s a standard small size.. what I don’t really understand is… once the concrete fireback has been installed properly, can a cast iron insert (like the old Victorian ones) be put over it with a new surround? Or are they meant to stay as is with a fire basket?

I’m obviously I little out of my depth at the minute so am just trying to get a little more info from people who have undertaken these projects (before I pay a small fortune on getting someone to do it for me).

I’ve added a couple of images that may help.

Installing a solid fuel fireplace needs doing by a registered competent person who can self certify, or certifying via building control. I'd suggest the former. I'd suggest you return the concrete insert and await the specification from a professional installer. I'd also suggest you consider a stove - they're more fashionable but they're also WAY more effective.
