Fireplace base removal

Please could someone advise me as to if it’s okay to remove the base of a fireplace. Please find pictures attached.

It looks like at some point a concrete base has been put in but I wouldn’t want to risk removing it if it’s structural.

Looking to build a hearth into it but I’d need to lower the fireplace base to make it all line up correctly.

House is 1930s build if that helps

Yes. It may be that concrete was placed there and bricks (side cheeks) built off it, so take care when removing. If there was an old Baxi fitted, you may come across an old air vent.
