I have just moved into a new house where there was a very retro gas fire with a fibreglass mantlepiece. I removed this and have revealed a flue but its off to one side. i'd like to keep the area as a feature and really want to get an idea of my options. The right hand side of the fireplace has pipes to a flat downstairs which is why the flue is off centre.

Will a gas fire be able to go back in to this space? Does it need to be flue-less for it to be centred? Will the gas fire have to be off centre?

Any advice would be great.
