Hello there!

I've just moved into a rented property, and in our lounge there is a modern "hole in the wall" gas fireplace attached where the original Victorian one would have been, against the chimney breast.

It is of the "living flame" type, and I believe it has an open flue up the chimney. Here is a picture of a similar, electric model (I can't find a pic of the gas variant that we have installed!)

Due to building subsidence (or bad installation!), it is not quite flush with the wall as you look down on it - little details like this annoy me, and I was wondering what kind of filler/sealant I can use to plug the gap between the surround and the wall??

I've seen you can buy fire cement, but this seems overkill as the description is for actually building brickwork for fires!!

Can I just use some multi purpose filler or silicone or something???

Many thanks,

Chris.

Hi Robbie,

I'm well aware of the conditions of a tenancy, however the property is rented from a close friend of mine and it wouldn't be an issue making small alterations.

Can you suggest anything that might help?

Chris.

Most of the fire place shops do a heat resistant silicon sealant, usually in black which will do the job. Might be an idea to have a small carbon monoxide detecter near to the fire just to check that its not leaking.
