Hi, I'm new to this site so please bear with me.
I've taken out an 60's fireplace and hearth. What I'd like to do is set in a new slate hearth (we have a hardwood floor over the original boards), fit a new wooden mantelpiece and retain the ability to have a coal fire. The fireback is intact but the base is broken (as in picture).
1. Do I need to remove all the old fireback to sort the base out?
2. If so should the new slate hearth go under the fireback) as a separate piece for expansion)
3. What should be used to face the wall between the new fireplace and the fireback, where do I obtain it and how is it all fitted?
All advice gratefully received.
Many thanks in anticipation of sound advice.
