Hi,

Finally moved out of the house of the noisey neighbours. My new house had a gas fire, linked to a gas boiler. Thats all been taken out, but we are now left with a 5ft high and three feet wide hole in teh chimney breast in the lounge.

Clearly, to be used as an open fireplace, it needs to be bricked up a bit. Other than reducing the size of the hole, whats involved in making it a working fireplace? We have tested the draw of the chimney and smoke comes out of the top with viger.

Does it need a particular kind of lining? Is it expensive etc ?

We were quoted almost £2k for installation (and supply) of a wood burning stove, including the chimney lining and flu etc, but thats a bit too much.

The fireplace will probably require a new lintle fitted and bricking up/plastering.

Not all solid fuel stoves require a liner, provided the existing flue is ok (fully smoke tested) this is acceptable for some manufacturers models.

A register plate is normally fitted at the base of the flue (sometimes with an access point for inspection).

Depending on the flue size the chimney pot may require cowl to prevent bird ingress.

Dependent on the stove ventillation in the form of wall vents may be required.

AFAIK installation is notifiable to the local BCO and should be installed by a HETAS registered installer.

Assuming the stove is £1000, the stainless steel twin wall liner £500, the vitreous glazed pipe off the stove £25.00, the vent £20.00, chimney scaffold say £200. Doesn't leave much for labour - 2 installers for a day.

Often when the existing pot is removed the stack requires extensive repairs. Believe me, I've stood 4 storeys up on the stack in a howelling gale with it raining in the dark shoving a liner down the flue - its no fun.

the stove we are looking at is £500, so theres £500 play in that price.

Dunno whats gonna be cheaper

Give us the web address for the stove/installation instructions

liner for solid fuel about 5 yr ago was approx 50 to 75 pounds per mtr.
