HI All, I need to fit a TRV to my existing towel rail in the bathroom, it is possible to get away with it without removing the existing boss that fits into the radiator, are they all a uniformed machined fitting that will interchange,

Sometimes towel radiators are used as a heat leak (aka heat sink). They are usually associated with systems heated by solid fuel or range cookers, and they operate independently of the rest of the central heating system. If this is the case, it shouldn't be fitted with a TRV, as it will prevent it serving its intended purpose.
