i wanted to replace a simple ceiling rose for a very simple, cheap spotlight set. Once I removed the rose I saw I had three black wires and two red wires coming from the ceiling. No earth. The wires seemed in good nick.

the fitting requires no earth as it is double insulated, but what do i do with all the wires....the light has a block that has one screw hole for N and another for L.

What shall I do?

Make a note of what wires go where on your ceiling rose. You'll need to know about it later (!)

Are you sure you dont have three red and three black? How many cables are there?

I think that you wanted to know how to connect the wires. If I am right this is the configuration:
1) Earth cable although not needed to connect to the fitting, should be linked to the earth of the next light fitting or if there is no next, insulate and terminate it safely. Do not cut it! you might need it in the future.
2) I assume that 3 black wires are 2 neutrals and one switch live, you have to verify this! The switch live comes from the switch and it has to be connected to the L of the fitting, it should have a red/brown sleeve/tape on it to mark that it is not a neutral but live. The netrals have to be connected to the N.
3) 2 reds are live they have to be connected together, not in the L position unless you wish to have the lights permanently on ;)

You will probably need it now for the cable to the switch on the wall.
