Fitting Carbon brushes to washing machine position..

Can I use the alternative holes in my motor to reposition my new carbon brushes so that the angle is correct?

Does it matter if they are positioned differently ?

Its just because I have bought two lots of carbon brushes now and they both state they are for my model of motor but the only way I can fit them is if I position them differently to the way they are just now?

That is the make and model number of your appliance? Also what is the part number of the brushes you have bought? It does matter how the brushes are aligned. The new brushes should go as per the the originals. Why wont they fit into the holes

The brushes fit into the wholes fine but the angle is incorrect! If I put them In to the alternative holes the angle is fine!

I have been told I can sand them down to get the correct angle but as this is the first time I have done this I would rather just buy ones with the correct angle in the first place!

I wondered whether the motor has these alternative holes for this very reason?

Can't post the model number just now as in the hospital with thE wife!

If you put the brushes in the alternative holes the relationship between the magnetic flux in the armature ( the bit that rotates ) and the magnetic flux in the stator will be changed. This could mean the motor runs at a different speed or may even cause the motor to run in reverse.

If you can take out the brushes that are in the motor you can compare them with the ones you have bought. The previous post is correct do not put your brushes in alternative holes

So is it usual to have to use some paper to sand them down to the correct angle? I just thought they would come at the correct angle?

This often happens,personaly I cut them with a junior hacksaw to as close an angle as possible, but you lose a bit of the brush.
It will work fine in the alternative fixing but sometimes the new hole is not threaded.

Do the brushes you have bought , match the type you have taken out? I would need the serial number also (because for this model there are different brushes listed for this model number) to identify the correct brushes

They are exactly the same and fit perfectly apart from the angle of the brush being wrong !

If they are the correct brushes the angle should be ok. I have never had to sand or alter in any way a set of brushes. The brushes will 'bed ' in with time. You can clean the commutator(the bit of the motor that turns which is in contact with the brushes ) with a comm stick to help them bed in but you would have to buy one.

New brushes arrived, angle correct and fitted fine!

Hardest part was getting the belt back on!

Washing machine appears to be working fine.
