i am fitting a new bathroom and am having trouble with cistern. i have a brass elbow to connect mains water, it has a compression on one side and a screw end that i am trying to connect to plastic thread from cistern. i cant seem to tighten the fitting enoug to stop it leaking and have it pointing in right direction down for pipe. any answers if you understand would be appreciated.

In my experience a brass elbow with a fibre washer will not do up tight enough to stop leaks, on a plastic thread. A flexible tap connector or pushfit one with a rubber washer and a deeper thread would solve the problem, provided the threads aren't already stripped from doing the brass one up too tight. If the pipework is visible and a plastic connector would be an eyesore you might want to go for a brass float valve instead of the plastic one, then you'll be able to do the brass connector up tight enough. If you wait a while maybe someone will post a more ingenious way of sorting it out.

I am a householder not a professional.

servive valves are designed for this type of fiiting
just don't over tighten them and stretch the plastic thread.
