Fitting FD30 fire doors

I have to fit 5 x FD30 fire doors (4 bedrooms and a kitchen).
Fire officer has requested brush type intumescent seals.
How does intumescent seal work regards going across hinges, if that's necessary.
Two or three hinges.
Can anyone advise method.

should have 3 hinges fitted,and if you really want to go over kill then hinge pads behind the leaves of the hinges.
only ever fitted the pads a few times,even on big jobs never been supplied or been picked up on if not fitted.

As above. 3 hinges required and they need to be proper grade of fire-rated hinges (stainless steel with ball bearings). Generally fire doors are required to have closers fitted

Can the intumescent brush seal go on the door. I reckon it will be easier to router down the middle of the 3 door edges that pull the door casing out to do the same.
What about the 3 special hinges, does there have to be seal around the edge of the hinge, or can it be ignored.

sorry,yes unless the rebate has already been precut into the frames then yes router out the doors,as said the hinges pads go underneath the 1 blade of the hinge.i suppose you could take the black strip out and place that under rather then buying the dedicated pads,which iirc are a tad expensive.

Hi, thanks for the explanations; I saw what pads are at link here but I cannot see that this forms a smoke seal in the hinge region

• What is the "1 blade"?
• Are smoke seals ignored in the region of the hinge?
• Why are these pads placed under the hinge?

The pads are intumescent - they expand to form a fire seal in the event of a fire but do not stop smoke which is generated in the initial phases of a fire at lower temperatures. Cold smoke seals ("brush strips") are designed to limit the movement of smoke from the room in which it is being generated so losing a small amount of sealing for the hinges and lock plate is generally regarded as acceptable. You can get specific three side sealed door sets but the are rarely specified as they must come a a complete door/frame set. Remember that there will in any case be a 6 to 10mm gap at the bottom of the door....

What you probably need are called combined smoke seal and intumescent strips. These normally come in 15 and 20mm widths and are most easily routed using an intumescent strip cutter - you will need to take the door down and rest it on trestles as well as remove any ironmongery which will get it the way of the router cutter or baseplate (e.g. hinges, lock, finger plates, kick plates, door handles, etc)
