I’m fitting a new float valve but it was too short to reach the water connection so I’m attaching a 1/2 inch tap extension onto it. This red washer came with the tap extension, the black rubber one is the one that was there before (where I’ve put the red one on the pipe coming out of the wall just to show where the black one was). Where am I putting these washers, do I put the red washer there & leave the black rubber one off or put the black one back where it was & put the red inside the extension? Also any PTFE needed on this connection or just on the end of the float valve?

Red fiber washer.
Rubber 0 ring.

I always recommend brass thred inlet vs plastic.
You can use either the fiber washer or the rubber but not both.
Rubber works better with plastic inlet. Don't tighten too much with the plastic as they leak.

Regarding length. Yeah it's a pain so you need to stick to a brand thats a consistent length from day one.
You may need to drop new pipe down then back up to connect up

I rarely come across a float valve that is a different length, has any thing been moved, like a thicker doughnut washer?
