They were re-doing the floor at work a while ago, so I took an offcut, which is big enough to do my bathroom floor - brilliant.

I'm going to lift the floorboards and lay a sheet of something down; I'll also prime it just in case water gets in.

I'm then going to cut the lino and... well, now for the question:

I don't want to glue it, just in case it ever needs to come up again, but I also don't want to mess up the job.

Do I have to glue lino down?

thanks

I think you mean vinyl.

no, but after giving it a week to relax into shape, you can use white silicone in the gap under the skirting. It stops dust, dirt, ants and spillages, gives a neat clean join that hides irregularities, and prevents movement at the edges. If your skirting is painted white you will not even see it.

It will look better if you can slip it under the skirting rather than trying to get a butt.

4mm ply makes a good underlay for vinyl. If you have floorboards, it will prevent the lines of the joints between boards showing and causing wear lines. Put the factory cut edges to the middle of the room where they will meet perfectly, and your own cut edges around the perimeter of the room where they will not show. You just need a few big staples to hold it steady.
