fitting new pvc windows

I am finding it hard to get anyone to quote to fit a 600(h) x 1200 (w) pvc window in a bedroom wall.
I have known builders to fit smaller windows, say 800 (h) x 500 (w) without fitting a lintel.
Is this still allowed cos I am wondering whether I could do the job myself, probably doing most of the work from the inside.

1) fitting a new window into a new location

2) replacing an old window

Your post is not too clear as you mention no lintel

I am considering fitting two small windows myself and wonder if it is necessary to fit lintels if the windows are only 500mm wide (and separated from each other by, say,500mm)
