Fitting on end of expansion pipe

Just moved house and there's some kind of "spring loaded" fitting on the end of the 15mm expansion pipe as it enters the expansion tank lid (it hovers above the water line). What is this fitting for? Can I remove it?

Expansion pipe should be 22mm. No fittings (apart from couplers and elbows) are allowed on these pipes.
