fitting pipe in joists

the last topic got locked due to discussions between plastic and copper

well after reading all the posts i will most likely use plastic pipe with brass compression fittings apart from the piping into the boiler and up to the radiators where it will be copper

anyway if using plastic is it best to notch the top of the joist or drill holes and feed through the middle of the joist?

also how much does the pipe need to be clipped?

Through the middle and thread it.

See the makers info which most is on the web. Clip very well indeed. Clip before and after joints and before and after bends.

Please do read the MIs, and be aware that you can clip too much, because plastic pipe needs room to expand when hot.

In case the point has got missed in the noise, also make sure that you use barrier pipe.

He means 'put it through the hole'.

Another tip - close the end of the pipe when feeding through/under/over stuff, to prevent debris entering the pipe. Coils of Hep2o come with a red cap for this very purpose.

Also, when making on the connection to the end of the coil, always cut back to clean unscratched pipe.

DEFINITELY.
I would use tape or a sealant of some sort on the olive as well.

All the makers say use only PTFE tape over the olive. Some say use copper olives some brass. Check.

When threading plastic pipe it is best to insert the stop plug provided and tape all the pipe back about 18 inches to prevent scratches. The scratches can prevent a good seal. Also scratches can give weaks spots where the pipe may split after a number of years.
