fitting wall unit to base unit

I have fitted two base units with the intention of a worktop and then two 300mm wide wall units on top of these.

does the worktop span the base units completely and then put sit the small wall unit on top of the work top or do I attach the wall units to the base units with the worktop in between.

Just to advise i have

1000 mm two door base unit attached to a 500mm single door base unit.

two 300mm wall units one to sit against the wall on the left most part and the other to sit on the rightmost part.

One worktop.

Not normally. Wall units are normally mounted on the wall.
