my inlet is cold pipe only but w/m takes both hot and cold, can i connect only cold and ignore or close off hot inlet on back of w/m or do i need a plumber to run a hot pipe and connect it

you can usually just connect the cold. No need for hot supply. Check the makers instructions.

If you want someone else to read the instructions for you, you'd better tell us the make and model.

i did just that after posting the question, answer is you can connect both hoses to the cold pipe using a T connector but the programs will run slower, i presume because the w/m would have to heat the water.

actually on older m/c that's not true.

the hot is used to take the powder in from the soap drawer. so if nothing is connected to the hot the soap does not get aken in, and if its a60 or above wash, it will never fill because it uses just the hot
