flashing battery light

hi i have a dell latitude d505 laptop and yesterday the battery light has started flashing at me 1 green followed by 4 quick orange/red ones.
it doesnt flash when i take out battery and run on ac power alone but does when battery in and ac connected

does this as i take it to mean, that the battery needs replacing? it is 7 years old

I'm afraid so...we had about 15 of these at work and this is what happens when the battery is no longer charging properly...you should also notice the machine doesn't last long on battery.

Can a deep drain on the battery be performed, followed by a deep recharge? ie Dont use it within this cycle?

Run as many apps as possible on flashing, to deep discharge the battery....then leave it alone for a complete recycle charge? Then repeat?

For like 3-5 times? pain in the bum, but cheaper than a new battery..

the batterery lasts for about 90- 180 mins which is about what it always has done enough to watch a film or longer if only surfing the web.
