Hi thanks in advance for all replies. Basically I noticed the lights to my new kitchen extension starter to flicker, there on a dimmer switch. After reading up on this a little I checked the wiring on the dimmer and all seemed correct. I replaced the dimmer switch plate onto the wall and the lights seemed to work fine and put it down to a loose connection. Anyway the problem has started again, and now seems to effect the whole house even though the lights to the kitchen are on a seperate consumer unit. The problem seems worse or more obvious when the dimmer switch is at its middle setting....does any one have any ideas on possible cause and solution before I call my sparky. Thanks again.

Do table lamps do the same too? Seen this not so long back - was the DNO fuse sizzling at their transformer.

Oop,s did not read the whole post properly.
call the electrician back.

How did the builder's electrician supply that separate new consumer unit?

It smells a bit like a loose connection at the supply end - possibly a meter tail not engaged properly or a consumer unit busbar not clamped into an MCB properly.

A problem like this needs looking at NOW as it will not get better and could cause overheating and fire. Stop messing around with dimmers. If its the whole house then its more fundemental.

The electrician that did the job should have a guarantee - especially if he is Part P registered. Get him/her back to fix it.

Thanks Guys....ive spoke to my spark today. He is part P for the record. Hes said it could only be down to the supply coming into the house if all the lights are doing this, but didnt seem to keen on having a look.
Its not effecting any other circuit, just the lights. Been keeping an eye on the lights today and the have been okay for most part of the day, however did notice the flickering around 3pm. Now there fine, touch wood. The extension has its own trip switch box, this is what I meant by its own consumer unit.
How can I force my spark to come and check it out for safety reasons? I stay clear of the majority of electrical work so some of the terms used go over my head. Does any one else have any ideas/ possible solution. Thanks again for peoples comments so far.

Dude, you need to get your story straight. You said
Anyway the problem has started again, and now seems to effect the whole house

If its just the lights in the kitchen and the dimmer is suspect, remove the dimmer for now and put in a normal switch. If it still happens then its the sparks wiring or (as I said) a loose connection - perhaps in the new consumer unit or its connections.
