ime having the upstairs carpeted and the floor boads are pretty rough can i use hardboard to cover the hole area or do i have to use 6mm ply thanks

Hardboard or ply will cover minor imperfections. but if they are screwed/glue to the underneath you will still have humps and hollows. The only real cure is to remove the boards and lay a new floor with flooring grade ply or chipboard.
