I've been quoted the same price by two flooring specialists to staple 6mm MDF and 6mm marine plywood to my floorboards in readiness for new underlay and carpets. Flooring specialist number two tells me that under no circumstances should I consider MDF, as it's not waterproof. I'm not recarpeting the kitchen or bathroom, I should add. Does it really matter and can I really expect to pay no more for marine ply than I would for MDF?

The two firms offer different underlays also. The MDF advocate is offering 11mm PU foam underlay, while the marine ply merchant is offering 9mm rubber underlay. In either event I'm opting for a wool/polypropolene felt backed carpet. Is either underlay significantly more advantageous for reducing airborne sound from below?

WPBP ply everytime,

6mm is nearly double the price of 4mm. If you are fitting carpet and underlay 4mm is more than suitable. Why are you considering 6mm?

11mm PU is much better than rubber of any thickness (IMO) however is not necessary after boarding - 9mm is fine for your choice of carpet.

BUT.....

you mention that sound insulation is a concern - if this is so then maybe you should consider a specialist underlay - there are a few on the market and they are usually a layer of felt bonded to a layer of crumb rubber. Be aware that they are more expensive however. To save cash you could opt to go for the 11mm PU (- I personally find it too springy for my liking, especially when fitted to a wooden floor)

Thanks guys,

The only reason I'm looking at 6mm boarding is because both fitters suggested it. I was initially thinking about 18mm ply as a sound barrier, but am advised it'll be a waste of money.

Is MDF a definite no-no?
