will floor tile cut ok with those £40 tile saws?
I've got to tile the walls so was thinking about getting one for that anyway, but what about the thicker floor tiles?

it's still a toss up at the minute whether to use laminate or tile for the floor..

Yes they'll cut them with ease. Forget the laminate - horrible stuff.

think I might..
i've started scraping the broken and scratty vinyl tiles off the floor ( council specials.. ) and I''m left with a black sticky stuff.. presumably the adhesive they put the vinyls down with..
can i tile over this or do i need to get it all up somehow?

Is the floor concrete or timber? In either case, it's worth putting a layer of ply down to get a nice level surface IMO, and especially important if it's a timber floor (in which case, you won't need to get the rest of those tiles up).

as long as its not loose you can actually tile over the residue of the sticky sh*t.

it's a concrete floor..

it's stuck on pretty good, the scraper won't shift it..
if it has to come up it'll have to be some sort of solvent to shift it..

but if I can tile over it then that's great..

do I really need a layer of ply on concrete?

If the floor is concrete, this is madness IMO. ;)

If the tiles were firmly stuck down, the op could have tiled straight onto them anyway.

there were several missing patches where someone had already tried to get them up, and consequently given up and just put lino down..

would self leveling compound be ok to level the floor out of it needs it? or would th tile adhesive take care of that?

You'd get away with just using adhesive. It'd be easier though if you screed any missing larger areas with adhesive and let it go off, then tile.

listen to mr Gc he makes sense for an old un ;)

it wouldnt hurt to use self level, but more expensive and time consuming than just using adhesive.
