I'm replacing my kitchen floor tiles which are ceramic with slate , have taken up most of the old tiles but the adhesive is very difficult to remove - do I have to remove it or can I just put new adhesive on top for the new tiles or do I have too put a leveling compound down?

thanks

Your new tile adhesive will stick to old stuff no problem. However, you really need to try and get the surface as flat as possible or you're gonna struggle when you come to lay your tiles. You can use self levelling compound but ideally you should try and get up the old stuff so it's smooth.
