im thinkinbg of lifitng my carperts and just having the floorbaords sanded and varnished as they are in good enough condition, howere there are some small gaps between some of the boards, couple mm, what is the best way to fill these?
In older properties you should see the flooraboards as your underfloor (where in modern houses concrete floors are used). Lifting carpets and sanding the existing floorboards is like 'leveling' your conrete floor and painting it.
There will always be draft coming from underneath (the needed ventilation area, NEVER block that to prevent draft). You can fill the gaps, but whatever method you use, evenutally it will fall down in the ventialtion area beneath.
But, if you don't mind that, collect saw-dust from the 2nd sanding, mix that with woodfiller, fill the gaps with it. Any excess will be removed by the 3rd sanding.
I think so, yes.
If you have already removed the carpet, you could try to feel the amount of draft coming in.
Alos, existing floorboards are 9 out of 10 times softwood - pine and will easily damage.
