Having removed the floor coverings I've found that some board parts are missing at edges (where there was boxing), and the floorboards in general are in a varying condition, so I want to replace floorboards in some places, and add floorboards in others.

A wide variety of different nails were used - I'm unclear about what nails should have been used. What are the correct nails to use for floorboards?

Traditionally, cut nails are used for fixing floor boards and work very well.

However, I feel it's often better to use screws, as it makes life a lot easier if and when you have to take boards up again for access.

if your covering it up again definatly use screws or at the least ring shank nails. if your going to sand it or expose it use traditional cut floor brads.
