My daughter has have just bought a 1960's house which has a disused chimney in the kitchen. The opening has been sealed, and plastered over, but is showing signs of damp. A plumber quoting for a different job advised me to have the chimney capped and an airbrick fitted at the base on the exterior.
Since then I have had a better view, and spotted that there is already a pepperpot cap at the top. I have opened the cast iron inspection hatch (9 inch square) and removed some debris. The hatch hinges are rusted through and although I could refit it, could I fit a vent instead to provide the airflow?
