My sister had a flourescent light that was controlled by a dimmer switch.
I replaced the dimmer with a single way on/off switch, as I thought it was unsafe.
was this the right thing to do, and why?
I worked for sanyo making plant incubators/freezers (worst job ever !).
You can get ballasts for flourescent tubes that dim, these were made by Phillips. 12/15" long, 1" square if I remember rightly. and the dimmer side was controlled by (12v) low voltage.
Might be worth checking the ballast.
In answer to your origonal question you did the right thing, this is because an ordainairy ballast (the "workings") of a normal flourescent tube is not suitable to be controlled by a dimmer switch, the same also applies to low voltahe lights , you should use an electronic dimable transformer if you wish to dim these
