Footstool leg falling off

One leg of my footstool keeps falling off. It is attached by two metal screws which fit into metal-lined holes, tightened by an Allen key. It has been fine for years, occasionally coming loose but OK after tightening, but now it will not stay on. Is there anything I can do other than glue it on?

Wendy, you really need to change your user ID to be something other than your email address - you are leaving yourself wide open to spammers at the moment

Thank you. I have only just registered and hadn't realised it had set my username to my email. On investigation I find I am not allowed to change it for a month!

Thank you for your assistance. How does one 'message DIYnot'? I can't upload photos - I am 82 without a mobile phone.

It sounds like the footstool legs has threaded metal inserts, which were forced into the timber prior to assembly?
I guess these have now worked loose, hence your problem.
It may be possible to glue them back in place, using an epoxy resin adhesive such as Araldite but this is unlikely to be a permanent repair.
It may be worth considering gluing the complete leg into the corner, but still using the inserts too.

Thank you very much. You are correct about the threaded metal inserts. I will follow your advice - very grateful.

My pleasure.....most adhesives though like to be clamped in place after application to the timber, which can be a chore!
It may be possible to reinforce things with screws too - unless it’s a priceless antique!

Oh dear, I don't think I could manage that. Perhaps it's time to get a man in!

It should be a fairly straight forward repair for anyone with a few basic tools......it may well glue pretty well as it is, but bear in mind glue doesn't like varnish or any polished surface - this has to be prepared with glasspaper or equivalent.
Of course a picture or two would help, but I've no idea how to post them either!
Regards
John :)

If you can glue the insert into the hole then stand the stool upright, you can put pressure on it by simply loading the stool up with heavy books overnight while the glue sets. As stated, a 2-part epoxy type of glue, such as Araldite, will probably be the best type but you only have a short time, (about 5 minutes), before it begins to set. Full setting will take about 24 hours.
